Many people think a PRE horse is only for advanced riders. That is not true. Nicky Lieberton shares how she went from show jumping to PRE ownership and why this breed can be perfect for beginners and leisure riders too.
When I tell people I own a PRE horse, I often hear: 'But isn't that only for experienced riders?' I understand the question: Spanish horses have a reputation for fire and spirit. But the reality is more nuanced.
My own story
I started my riding career in showjumping. After a break to raise my family, I missed riding enormously, but I wanted something different: something calmer, with more connection. That is how I became captivated by Iberian horses. The moment I met Fandango, a PRE gelding, I knew immediately. He was calm, curious, and had a softness about him I had never experienced in a sport horse before. These days I ride at Z1 level and am working towards Grand Prix, but without the rush and stress I knew from my jumping years.
What makes a PRE suitable for leisure riders?
PRE horses are deliberately bred for character. ANCCE breeders in Spain use temperament as a strict selection criterion: many PRE horses are naturally calm, intelligent and people-oriented. A well-trained PRE is patient with its rider, versatile for hacking and ground work, and forgiving of small mistakes.
When might a PRE be less suitable?
Honesty matters here too. Young, untrained PRE horses are not suitable for beginners. Some bloodlines produce more temperament than others. At NL Stables we therefore carefully select which horse suits which rider. We never offer horses that are too spirited or too green for the buyer.
What to look for when buying?
For beginner or leisure riders, choose a horse aged 8-12 with solid basic training. Always ask about the specific horse's temperament and always ride before buying.
