Buying a Horse from Spain: Costs, Process and What to Avoid

Dreaming of an authentic Spanish horse? Buying a horse in Spain is certainly possible, but there is more involved than you might think. We explain the process, costs and pitfalls.

Paard kopen in Spanje

Buying a horse in Spain appeals to many riders: the breeds are beautiful, the studs are world-famous, and prices are often lower than in Northern Europe. But there are also risks and procedures you should know about.

Step by step: the buying process

1. Search and selection

It starts with the search for the right horse. You can travel to Spain yourself and visit breeding farms, but that is time-consuming and requires market knowledge. A professional intermediary who knows the market, such as NL Stables through our dream horse service, saves you a great deal of time and disappointment.

2. Veterinary vetting

Before purchase, a thorough veterinary vetting is essential. A proper pre-purchase examination consists of a clinical examination, radiological examination (X-rays), a movement assessment and blood work. Make sure the vetting is carried out by an independent vet, not by the seller's own vet.

3. Export documents

To import a horse from Spain to the Netherlands, you need: an ANCCE pedigree (for PRE horses), an EU horse passport, a health certificate from a recognised vet, and a TRACES notification (the electronic EU transport document).

4. Transport

Horse transport from Spain to the Netherlands usually takes one to two days. Costs average between €800 and €1,500, depending on the route and the number of horses travelling together.

What does it cost to import a horse from Spain?

Average additional costs: veterinary pre-purchase vetting €300-600, export paperwork and TRACES €150-250, transport €800-1,500. Total: approximately €1,250 to €2,350 on top of the purchase price. These costs also apply if you use our dream horse service.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is buying without a veterinary vetting. A horse can look fantastic but still have hidden issues. Also never rely solely on photos and videos: horses are filmed at their best moments. Always check the seller's reputation and ask for references. Do not underestimate the language and culture barrier either: doing business in Spain works differently than in the Netherlands.
